The Time I Spent a Week at Lewey Lake

It has been well over 10 years since I’ve actually been on a real 7 day vacation.  And I am PSYCHED (yes I said that like the cheer) about this!

Today is the maiden voyage of Edith Elantra (well… Edith Elantra Part 1 – for later trips she really transforms). My bike and kayak (both hot pink I might add) are strapped to the top and ready to travel the 2 hours to Lewey Lake State Park; where we will enjoy the forest for the next 7 days!

After unpacking and setting up camp, we took to the lake! We were able to launch our kayaks from a small launch site just across the way from our campsite.  We spent some time paddling in the channel between Indian Lake and Lewey Lake, and then headed out onto Lewey Lake.

After dinner, we decided to take a walk through the campground, and over to Indian Lake.

Snowy Mountain looms in the background.  Dad and I may hike that later this week.

The clouds were looking pretty grey, and it began to sprinkle. So we headed back to camp.

Today we took a trip up to Tupper Lake to visit The Wild Center. We watched and otter show with Scarlett the Otter, I attempted to paint a dog (which failed miserably) and we took The Wild Walk and other hikes on the premises.  The hikes were probably my favorite part.

On our way back from Tupper Lake, we stopped at Buttermilk Falls to completed 1 of the easy hikes in the 4-3-2-1 Way Challenge.

After making it back to camp, I set up my hammock and read for a few hours.   If that could be a job, I’d take it.

Tuesday morning we decided to take a walk through some of the other loops at Lewey Lake.  I found heaven, well as close to heaven on earth you can find.  If you can handle “primitive” camping, this is the loop for you.  Check out sites 7-11.  There are only outhouses in this loop, but each site has private access to a creek.

Set up your hammock in the woods to hear the stream nearby, and you’ll never want to leave.

Can you say Enchanted Forest anyone?

After that adventure, we completed our 4 hikes needed for the easy portion of the 4-3-2-1 Way Challenge.

Today we took to the lake again, and paddled our way around the perimeter of the whole of Lewey Lake. It was quite warm, and my favorite part was taking off my water shoes, paddling fast and then dipping my toes into the water. Pure Bliss.

We stopped for lunch on a pile of rocks about halfway around the lake.

I got sunburn. No surprise there.

Mom made the best breakfast there has ever been today.  It was with has brown, egg, cheese, bacon and sausage mixture that was so good, I had seconds, and thirds.

It rained most of the day, so we drove to Old Forge to check out some of the shops there.

Since the rain has now leaked into the corner of my tent, I spent a lot of time thinking about how to convert the back of Edith Elantra into a mini-camper for just me.  I’ve started a planning spread in my bullet journal for this… we shall see how that turns out.

Today was a lazy day.  I spent a majority of the day reading and winning in my hammock, which by the way, is literally the best camping experience ever.  There was several books, a couple of movies and likely a nap or two.

Going home is always a sad day, but I’m pretty ready to get there.  I miss my cat snuggles with Ace and Mac.
