Buttermilk Falls

7.10.17

My original plan was to complete the 4-3-2-1 Way (Indian Lake) Challenge this week.  It seemed simple enough 4 easy hikes, 3 moderate, 2 difficult and then either Snowy or Blue Mountain.  But the more I thought that one through the more I realized that it would be unlikely that I’d be able to do all 10.

But I was able to accomplish some of them.  One of which was Buttermilk Falls.

Trip Details

  • Date: July 10, 2017
  • Who Hiked: Mom, Dad, Me
  • Route/Trails: Buttermilk Falls
  • RT Mileage: 0.21 miles
  • Time: 31 minutes
  • Snacks: None
  • Memorable Thing: The smoothness of the water rushing over rocks above the falls.
  • Elevation: N/A
  • Ascent/Descent: 52 feet

We did this on our way back from the Wild Center in Tupper Lake on Monday. It’s a very short hike, most places that list it don’t even give it mileage. We clocked about 0.21 miles total while we were there.

There’s a small parking lot that I’m sure fills up fast since this is a very popular swimming hole.

Today, we were only 1 of 3 groups there.  The water was gushing and would probably not be the safest time to swim.

The path is short and sweet from the road to the falls, and then you can travel left and right to explore both above and below the falls.

See what I mean by “gushing.” I was glad no one was attempting to swim today!

Above the falls

Above the falls, the water was slightly calmer and a great spot for fishing. At least, I assume so, since there were a group of people fishing in this area.  We spent a good 15 minutes just watching and listening to the water in this area.  I would have loved to have stayed longer, and wished I had thought to bring my hammock and kindle!
